black and asian adopters

Family Care firmly believes that a child’s best interests are served by being adopted into a family which closely matches their own in terms of race, culture and religion.

There is a large number of black, particularly African-Caribbean, and mixed parentage children looked after in local authority care for whom adoption is planned. Many of them wait far too long for the right family to come forward to adopt them and for some that wait goes on for ever. For many years Family Care has actively recruited black adopters to give children another chance of family life.

Family Care’s aim is to recruit black adopters and to raise awareness about adoption in black communities. We hope to dispel some of the myths and stereotypes around adoption.

We are developing links with individuals and agencies working with the black community. In Autumn 2005, we developed an artwork initiative at Hyson Green Youth Club in partnership with Ishango and Erondu After-School Projects.

As part of Family Care’s adoption support we aim to set up a black adopter’s support group, where black adopters can meet and share their experiences.
